The MLB was set to begin at the end of March, but due to COVID-19 baseball fans haven't been able to watch America's Pastime. Major League Baseball has been searching for different plans to get the season started, but still practicing social distancing. They have stated multiple times that they are wanting to get the season under way in May, so that means they will finish up spring training, and then begin the season. League Officials have thrown around an idea of moving all regular season games to the spring training facilities in Arizona. This will allow all 30 MLB to be within a close proximity of each other, which can help reduce the possibility off COVID-19 since they will not have to travel to heavily affected cities.
My Opinion
I believe that this could have a positive and negative effect both on the MLB and the teams. First with the positive side, this will allow America's Pastime to finally begin, and as a former player myself I know all the players are just itching to get back out on the field. Another positive factor is that all 30 teams will not have to spend as much on traveling expenses since they will all be within a close radius of each other. The first negative I have is from a player perspective. I know many players are wanting to get the season underway, but also many players have voiced their opinion about wanting to play in front of their fans. Baseball players impact so many peoples lives, whether it is from giving a young kid a chance to see their first game or giving a an upcoming player the confidence that they could be out on that field one day. Another negative is from the teams perspective. I can only imagine how much money these teams will be losing from not having any fans at their games, and not playing in their home ballparks. The teams make most of their money in sales from tickets, merchandise, and concession sales, and without games happening in their home ballparks they will lose sales.
Questions I Have
The first question I have is will the MLB and the teams decide to go ahead with this idea? My next question is, what will this do for the minor league teams? Will they be able to begin their seasons during the same time as the MLB? The teams will need their minor leaguers to be getting some sort of live reps during this time in case of injury to one of their big leaguers. What questions do you have?
